Assistant Library Director


Livingston Parish Library is seeking a dynamic individual with excellent people skills to work with the director in leading the organization and creating a new vision for service. In-depth knowledge of, and prior experience with, programs and branch management is highly desirable. The new Assistant Director will have the opportunity to work with the director in the creation of a new branch library; will be involved in the development of the library's long range plan, as well as evaluating current branch services and facilities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Oversees Branch operations; supervises and evaluates branch managers

  • Assists the Library Director in establishing internal library policies and procedures.

  • Consults with department heads on administrative and technical library problems

  • Conducts studies and analyses of library operations and makes recommendations

  • Represents the library at community and group meetings

  • Conducts staff meetings or staff training sessions

  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating and capital budget

  • Assists Director in tax elections, bond issues, and other funding initiatives

  • Oversees all library promotions, publicity, and newsletters

  • Acts as Library Director in his absence

  • Responsible for supervising maintenance of facilities and grounds

  • Oversees ordering and inventorying office and janitorial supplies

  • Performs other related work as required


Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Substantial knowledge of the principles and practices of library science including reference techniques, collection development, readers advisement, cataloging and classification, and online services

  • Substantial knowledge of the provision of library services to specialized patron groups, such as children, student, adult independent learners, recreational readers, and non-users

  • General knowledge of public service management theory and practice, including the preeminence of customer satisfaction, strategic planning using goals and objectives, staff development and supervision methods, time management, organizational skills, community relations, and publicity, promotion, and marketing skills

  • Communicates clearly and concisely, oral and in writing with good spelling, including making public presentations as needed

  • Candidates should be knowledgeable in contemporary library technology.

  • Applicants must also have a mastery of organizational, decision-making, team-building, and leadership skills.

  • Manages multiple projects and meets deadlines utilizing strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Exercises good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, perform, and evaluate work assignments with initiative and judgment, independently or with minimal supervision

  • Interpret library policies, objectives and facilities to community groups and the general public

  • Analyze problems and make recommendations

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, the public, and peers in other agencies

Required Qualifications

Graduation from an American Library Association accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Library Science, and five (5) years of public library experience, at least two (2) of which must have been in administration.

Professional certification, or eligibility for certification, as an Administrative Librarian by the State Board of Library Examiners

Strong managerial and administrative abilities, as well as a desire to serve the public

Excellent written and oral communication skills

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $58,400, paid employee health insurance, annual and sick leave, retirement
