LIvingston Parish Library offers more than one hundred public access computers for patrons to use. In addition the library offers free computer classes to the public.
The classes focus on the basic knowledge needed for using your home computer. Topics covered include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, E-mail and Internet. Please inquire at your local library for more information. Class summaries are listed below. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
Microsoft Word: This class will focus on the main aspects of Microsoft Word. You will learn the common toolbars, formatting text and page layout. There will be hands-on typing and use of the toolbars. The class should help with an overall understanding of the word processing environment and use of common elements of Windows programs.
Microsoft Excel: This class will focus on the main aspects of Microsoft Excel. You will learn use of a spreadsheet in a home/office environment. The class should gain a foundation of knowledge for developing formulas and data entry. Toolbars will be explained and the class will create a spreadsheet based on a grading system.
Computer Basics: If you have never used a computer before or are having trouble getting started using a computer, this is the class for you. Here we will learn how to safely turn on and off your computer, learn how to use the mouse, open and close files, save a file, and the basics of using windows.
E-mail Basics: Don't have an e-mail account? Don't know how to use e-mail even if you did? Then this is the class for you! In e-mail basics we will cover what e-mail is, how it started, and how it works. Students will learn how to read an e-mail address, the parts of an e-mail, e-mail etiquette, how to read and send an e-mail, and open an e-mail account of their own.
Internet Basics: If you have never been on the Internet or have been but want to learn more about it then this is the class for you. In Internet basics we will cover what the Internet is, and how it works. Students will learn how to read an Internet address, use links, search for different web pages, and troubleshoot when the address they have doesn't work.
Intermediate Internet This class requires some knowledge of how the Internet works. You will learn to adjust the settings on your browser, put web pages in favorites, and delete temporary internet files to keep them from clogging your computer. You will also download pictures from the Internet. We will find people, make maps, and find local movie listings. Finally, you will learn what databases the library subscribes to and how to use them.
Intermediate Email To take this class, you must have had Internet Basics or have a Yahoo email account. You will learn to put a signature on your messages. We also cover how to use the address book to save addresses and send messages. Sending and receiving attachments (both graphic and textual) will be covered as well as creating folders to save your messages in. You will also learn some email troubleshooting.
