It’s Dino-mite: Livingston Parish Library to hold Summer Reading Program Kickoff Day

The Livingston Parish Library is ready to kick off this year’s Summer Reading Program with a roar!

The public is invited to the Livingston Parish Library’s annual Summer Reading Program Kickoff Day celebration on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. This special event will be held at all five LPL branches during normal hours of operation.

Traditionally one of the library’s busiest days of the year, Kickoff Day is a day-long celebration packed with creativity, crafts, and prizes for readers of all ages. Like all library-sponsored events, Kickoff Day is open to the public, and there is no cost to attend.

“This is a great way to really, formally start the Summer Reading Program,” said Scott Kleinpeter, interim director for the Livingston Parish Library. “You're out of school, and you have a whole summer vacation ahead of you! What better way to begin than books, activities, prizes, and seeing your friends?”

Kickoff Day prizes and activities

All who visit their local branch on Kickoff Day will get an exclusive, one-day-only prize, in addition to the Summer Reading registration prize. There will be Kickoff Day prizes for kids, teens, and adults, but these will only be available on this day.

Visitors can also look forward to a special craft activity that brings prehistoric creatures to life. Using supplies provided by the library, participants will personalize a dinosaur cut-out and transform it into their own unique creation!

Additionally, staff will be on hand to assist patrons in signing up for the Summer Reading Program.

Summer Reading has officially begun

The Livingston Parish Library’s Summer Reading Program is officially underway and runs through Sunday, August 2. The 2026 SRP theme is Unearth A Story, highlighting the amazing discoveries that await at your local library!

Patrons of all ages are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Program by attending fun events hosted by the library and completing reading challenges. This year’s program consists of four age groups:

  • Read-to-Me: Ages 0-5
  • Youth: Ages 6-12
  • Teens: Ages 13-18
  • Adults: Ages 18 and older
