Your child's journey into a world of stories and discovery starts with one easy step – signing them up for a library card!

Getting your child a library card is a quick, easy process that’ll equip them with the tools and resources to learn, grow, and succeed.

Who can sign a child up for a library card?

Only the child's parents or legal guardians can sign their child up for a library card.

Other family members or acquaintances CANNOT sign a child up for a library card, including: grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, older family members, family friends, babysitters, etc.

Do I need a library card in order to sign my child up for one?

All youth accounts must have a parental association.

In other words: Yes, in order to sign your child up for a library card, the parent or legal guardian must also have an active library card.

What do I have to bring with me when I sign my child up for a library card?

Bring the same thing you brought when signed up for your library card: a current, valid ID that includes your name, an identification photo, and a Livingston Parish address.

Remember: A valid Louisiana driver's license with your current mailing address is always the best option.

If your photo ID does not have your current address listed, any of the following supporting identification types are acceptable:

  • Checkbook with a current mailing address
  • Mail with date cancellation showing mailing address
  • Receipt for payment of rent or utility charges within the parish
  • Lease agreement showing current address in parish

What will I have to fill out when I sign my child up for a library card?

A parent or legal guardian must fill out a Materials Restriction Form (MRF) before their child's card can be activated. Without filling out an MRF card, your child's library card WILL NOT be activated, meaning it CANNOT be used.

Learn more about the Materials Restriction Form in the next tab.

Am I responsible for any damaged or lost materials on my child’s account?

Any damaged or lost materials become the fiscal responsibility of the minor’s signee. In other words: Yes, a child’s parents or legal guardians are responsible for the costs to replace that child’s damaged or lost library materials.

The Livingston Parish Library believes parents and legal guardians are best positioned to guide their children’s reading choices. To help, we require a Materials Restriction Form for ALL Juvenile and Teen cardholders to set appropriate access levels.

This applies to any cardholder under 18 years old. A child's library card will not be activated – meaning it cannot be used – until a parent or legal guardian has filled out an MRF card.

What does each Materials Restriction Form contain?

Each MRF card will ask parents/legal guardians to select the desired access for each of the following two areas:

  1. Print Materials
    • No Restriction – No restrictions on child’s access to print materials.
    • Teen Restriction – Prohibits check-out of items from the adult collections. Cardholders with this restriction can only check out items from the teen, juvenile, and preschool collections.
    • Juvenile Restriction – Prohibits check-out of items from the teen and adult collection. Cardholders with this restriction can only check out items from the juvenile and preschool collections.
  2. Digital Materials and Resources
    • No Restriction – No restrictions on card’s access to digital materials and resources.
    • Restricted Card – Prohibits access to all library databases and digital media.

Can I ever change my child’s access level after it is set?

Yes, parents or legal guardians may change their child’s access level at any time. To do so, you must fill out a new Materials Restriction Form, indicating the desired access level.

We’re thrilled you want to renew your library card! And don’t worry – renewing your library card is just as easy as signing up for one!
